How to Talk to Kids About Divorce
If you and your spouse have decided to end your marriage and there are children involved, you’ll need to sit down with them and explain what’s going to happen. Although you certainly shouldn’t share any details about what led to the divorce, you’ll still need to let them know that you and your spouse have chosen to go your separate ways and what that means for them. Here are some tips on how to talk to kids about divorce:
- Speak to them together. As long as you don’t have concerns about domestic violence, you and your spouse should both be present when talking about the impending divorce with your children. Doing so can prove to your children that you and your spouse are still a team when it comes to caring for their needs.
- Offer reassurance. One of the most important messages that you need to get across to your children is that you and your spouse will both continue to love and care for them regardless of the divorce. You should also make it clear that your children never have to feel guilty about continuing to love both of their parents.
- Take the burden off their shoulders. Children often assume that divorce is somehow their fault. Make sure that your children know that they’re in no way to blame for your marriage ending.
As noted above, it’s critical that you not discuss the details of your divorce with your children, no matter how mature they may seem. While you may be in a great deal of pain right now, it’s important to remember that badmouthing your spouse will just cause your children to feel hurt and confused. Plus, because courts prioritize a child’s best interests when making parental responsibility and time-sharing determinations, the fact that you’re making disparaging comments about your spouse to your children could end up hurting your case in the long run.
