How Long Does Child Support Last?
Oftentimes, when a new client meets with one of our child support lawyers, one of the first questions they ask is how long they can expect to continue paying (or receiving) child support. In Florida, child support obligations usually end when the child turns 18, but that rule doesn’t apply in every situation. For example:
- If a child can’t support themselves because they have special needs, the court might direct the parents to continue paying child support indefinitely.
- If a child turns 18 before they graduate from high school, the court might extend the child support order through graduation (but note that if the child isn’t on track to graduate by the time they turn 19, the court will likely order child support to end on the child’s 18th birthday).
- If a child applies for emancipation, gets married, or enters the military before they turn 18, then the court may terminate the parents’ child support obligations early.
When you meet with one of the child support attorneys at our firm, we’ll be able to provide you with advice that’s tailored to your specific circumstances.
