What Is Bridge-the-Gap Alimony?

What Is Bridge-the-Gap Alimony

Chances are good that you’ve heard the term “alimony” before, but did you know that there are various different kinds of alimony, each of which serves a distinct purpose? One such type, known as “bridge-the-gap” alimony, is designed to help the dependent spouse with legitimate, identifiable short-term needs as he or she transitions from being married to being single. For example, if a divorcing couple has decided to sell their home and split the proceeds, but the dependent spouse doesn’t have the means to support him- or herself until the sale goes through, the court may order the other spouse to pay bridge-the-gap alimony to cover basic living expenses in the meantime.

It’s important to remember that bridge-the-gap alimony can’t continue on perpetually—it’s limited to two years maximum. It should also be noted that neither spouse can modify a bridge-the-gap alimony award once it’s been finalized. But if the dependent spouse (the one receiving alimony payments) gets remarried, then the bridge-the-gap award would be terminated, since the new spouse would likely be able to help financially support him or her.
